Listening to the Ocean roar.

January 10, 2009 by Marsha Marks

At 5:20 this morning, January 10, 2009, I stepped out on our top oceanside deck and was shocked to hear, quite clearly, the roar of the Ocean and the rhythmic crashing of waves. We are 1200 feet from the water and do not have a view (can’t afford a view - no, for those of you who are insistent - not even a peek - firm - we have NO view of the ocean. No, for those who are still asking…not even if you climb to the top of our roof do we have a view. We’ve tried it.) I can’t see it, but, I can hear it. I can hear it loud. In fact I came back inside; shut off the heat (it’s 44 degrees on this cold January morning) and opened the door to the front deck and left it open. Now, I’m sitting at our table, writing and listening to the gentle roughness, of wave after wave crashing… in a sound that for ages past has soothed those who love the sea.
And I love the sea. I love it in winter, when the ocean is tough and the waves loud. Loud enough to hear from our home on Tybee Island…on a cold January Morning.
